The Church of the Sacred Heart in Rush City shared a gospel meditation in a deck of cards in their Aug. 30 bulletin.
The Rev. Shane Stoppel-Wasinger shared a story about a soldier who did not have a Bible but did have a deck of cards.
“The young soldier told the Major that during the battle, he had neither a Bible or a Prayer Book, so he would use his deck of cards and explained: ‘You see, Sir, when I look at the ACE, it tells me that there is one GOD and no other,’” Fr. Stoppel-Wasinger said in the bulletin.
The 2 reminded the soldier that there were two parts of the Bible— Old and New Testaments.
The 3 reminded the soldier of the Holy Trinity— Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The 4 reminded the soldier of the four gospels— Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
“When I see the 5, it tells me of the FIVE UNWISE VIRGINS who were lost and that five were saved," Stoppel-Wasinger said. "The 6 makes me mindful that GOD CREATED THE EARTH IN JUST SIX DAYS, and GOD said that it was good."
The 7 was a reminder of God’s rest on the seventh day and the 8 is a reminder of the salvation of Noah and his family. 9 is a reminder of the nine lepers healed by God’s hand and the 10 serves a reminder of the Ten Commandments.
The Jack serves as a reminder of Satan and the Queen serves as a reminder of the Church, who is the bride of Christ.
Finally the King is a reminder of Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
“And so, the young soldier then said to the Major, ‘You see, Sir, my intentions were honorable,'" Stoppel-Wasinger said. "'My deck of cards serves as my BIBLE, my PRAYER BOOK, and my ALMANAC.’”
