St. Paul parishioners should put God's treasures to good use

God entrusted us with a treasure and expects us to make good use of it, Douglas Sousa told members of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in St. Paul, Minn.

“In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus tells the story of three men who are entrusted with a treasure by their king,” Sousa said in the church bulletin. “Though the king is gone only a short time, two of the men are able to double their money by investing it."

Why were they so successful?, Sousa asked. They understood the treasure's value and knew the wisdom of investing it. They also knew it was the king's treasure and they they would have to return it.

We are told very clearly that God entrusted the treasure to his servants and he does a similar thing with us. We are given this time on earth and a number of assets that we are to put to good use. When we fail to be good stewards, we will see that we will not have much to yield.

“It is often said that charity begins at home. The home is a school where children are taught to love and serve God. Whether we are parents or children, the home is the place where we learn to become holy. In fact, families which eat at least one meal together daily, pray, and go to Mass together, have practically a zero percent divorce rate,” Sousa said, the bulletin reported.

One of the talents that we have been given is our family. It is a treasure that we must be wise about and invest in constantly. Rather than taking for granted that we have a family, let us thank God for his care for us and dedicate ourselves to him.

“Perhaps we have to look no further than our own homes,” Sousa said.
