The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis is preparing for the Mass of Thanksgiving for its Auxiliary Bishop Andrew Cozzens in advance of his installation as the Diocese of Crookston's eighth Bishop.

The Archdiocese announced the Mass of Thanksgiving earlier this week for Cozzens through what he called "the greatest crisis" the Archdiocese has ever passed through: the sexual abuse allegations and all that has gone with it.

"Join in a Mass of Thanksgiving for Bishop Cozzens Sunday, November 28, 12 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Paul, with a reception following for people to greet him from 1-4 p.m.," the Archdiocese said in its Wednesday, Nov. 3, Facebook post.

The Archdiocese also announced the Mass of Thanksgiving on its website.

The announcements come almost three weeks after Pope Francis appointed Bishop Cozzens to be bishop of the Diocese of Crookston. Cozzens is expected to take over the chair vacated by Bishop Michael Hoeppner. Hoeppner resigned earlier this year at the pope's request following an investigation into allegations he engaged in a coverup of sexual abuse in the Crookston diocese, according to coverage by MPR News.

Cozzens told MPR that he hopes to be a "perfect fit" for the Diocese of Crookston and looks forward to blessing farms and farm equipment.

Cozzens, a Denver native who attended Benedictine College in Kansas, was ordained in 1997.  Pope Francis appointed Cozzens as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis in 2013, according to his bio on the Archdiocese's website.

"If you know anything about the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, then you know what was happening in 2013 when I was named [auxiliary] bishop," Cozzens said in a news conference the day his appointment to the Diocese of Crookston was announced. "The Archdiocese went through the greatest crisis it's ever gone through in its history. The sexual abuse crisis that broke in the archdiocese."

The crisis broke eight days before he received news about his appointment to the Archdiocese and his prayer image in that time became that of the brothers Shadrack, Meshach and Abednego in the fiery furnace, a story described in the Book of Daniel.

"That was the image of my prayer when I first became a bishop, like I was going into the fiery furnace. Cozzens said. "But I know who God is and I know that he'll be with me and he has been so much these past eight years."

In that time, he said he has dealt with "every aspect of that crisis," including interactions with victims, errant priests and civil and criminal law enforcement, as well as criminal charges against the Archdiocese, the settlement and bankruptcy.

"I've seen how difficult it can be to change the culture of the church so that we deal with the sexual abuse crisis correctly," he said. "That, to me, has become one of the important things that we've been able to do in the archdiocese, to change the culture so that we understand that victims are in fact the people we should be most caring for in the crisis and that the church can actually grow towards health and being part of the solution for this great problem which plagues all of our society."
