The ordination of the Rev. Joseph Williams will be held Jan. 25 after Pope Francis named the priest as auxiliary bishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.
Williams, a native of Stillwater, serves as pastor of the Church of St. Stephen and the Church of the Holy Rosary in Minneapolis, as well as Vicar for Latino Ministry for the Archdiocese, according to a press release.
“The Episcopal Ordination of Bishop-elect Joseph A. Williams will take place Tuesday, Jan. 25, Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle. A public reception will follow,” the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis wrote in a Facebook post.
Williams was born in Stillwater in 1974 as the third of nine children, according to the release. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota and then received a degree in philosophy/pre-theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville. He went on to study at The Saint Paul Seminary, where he earned a Masters of Divinity and was ordained to the priesthood in May 2002.
His brother, Fr. Peter Williams, is also a priest in the archdiocese.
Fr. Williams has previously served as the chaplain to the Minnesota House of Representatives, as well as the coordinator of Archdiocesan Outreach to Persons with Disabilities, KSTP reports. While he currently serves on the board of trustees of the Seminaries of St. Paul, in his new role as auxiliary bishop Williams will work with Archbishop Bernard Hebda to lead the church in the archdiocese, which encompasses the 12-county metro area.
