The Duluth Benedictines are in the midst of celebrating National Catholic Sisters Week, which kicked off on March 8.
Marking the ninth annual celebration of National Catholic Sisters Week (NCSW), the Benedictine Sisters of St. Scholastic Monastery used this opportunity to further their ministry of caring for the environment. The Benedictine Sisters live in a monastic society modeled after the Rule of St. Benedict.
“This week (March 8-14) we are highlighting our love and care for the earth," NCSW organizers tweeted. "Caring for the environment is our ministry work. We invite you to join us in making our world healthier.”
This week highlights the work the Sisters do every day, such as caring for the poor and teaching, and also encourages others to consider making a similar vocation.
“Catholic Sisters Week shines a light on the spirituality, mission and community building of women religious," organizers said on the NCSW website. During this week, "we shine the spotlight on women religious and encourage a wide range of campaigns and events that invite all who follow Jesus to expand and support their gospel witness, grow the service networks they have seeded, share their spirituality, charisma and community, encourage young women to consider a vocation to religious life, support their pastoral, teaching and prophetic work and focus on the new world they call into being.”
As recently as in 2020, there were just over 44,000 "women religious", meaning nuns and sisters, according to The Lily.
Another post on the NCSW site said Duluth Benedictines "support local nonprofits that advocate for the poor and the disenfranchised through prayer, advocacy, donation of money and goods, and volunteer hours. In these ways we work to promote peace and justice in the world."
