Bishop-elect of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester Robert Barron marked the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Saturday with a short tweet asking for her intercession.

“Our Lady of Mount Carmel, pray for us!” Barron tweeted

Mount Carmel is in northern Israel near the Fountain of Elijah. Franciscan Media explains that a group of hermits lived there since the 12th century. In the 13th century, the hermits became known as the Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Mary is said to have appeared to the Carmelite leader, St. Simon Stock, and gave him a scapular, Franciscan Media continues. Scapulars symbolize Mary's protection and encourage the wearer to devote himself to her. Scapulars also serve as a reminder of our call to prayer and penance, which Mary demonstrated in her life.

Mary is honored multiple times throughout the year. The Marians list some of those celebrations as: the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13; the Visitation on May 31; the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, on Jan. 1; the Annunciation on March 25; Mary's Assumption into Heaven on Aug. 15; and the Immaculate Conception on Dec. 8.

Mary has a special place among Catholics. As a human, she is among those in need of God's saving, but as the Mother of God, she received the gift of God's grace to an extent that surpasses all others, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) says. It was Mary's willingness to cooperate with God's plan that placed her in a crucial role in salvation. Catholics consider Mary a role model of discipleship and often ask for her intercession.
