During Lent, some parishes practice the Stations of the Cross, which are meant to depict Christ's journey from Pontius Pilate's praetorium to the tomb.

“Friends, might I suggest reflecting on the Stations of the Cross today?” Bishop Robert Barron, of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester, tweeted on March 24. “Walk with Jesus on the Via Crucis — for the cross must become the very structure of the Christian life.”

The Stations of the Cross involve 14 steps or stations that focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. This devotion is considered a mini pilgrimage, where people meditate, pray and recall Christ's last day while moving from station to station, according to Catholic Online

The Stations of the Cross are typically represented as 14 icons or images and can be found in churches or arranged along paths in church yards. However, sometimes this can be completed without traditional stations. They are often used in prayer during Lent on Wednesdays and Fridays, as well as on Good Friday, which is the day the events actually occurred. Each station consists of its own prayer to be recited.

To participate in the Stations of the Cross without the usual stations, a presiding minister (who may be a priest, deacon or layperson) leads the prayers at the beginning and end, announces the stations and says a prayer to finish each one. One or more readers can read passages from the Bible, followed by a moment of silence before the prayer. A person carrying a cross and two people holding candles can also be present at each station, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

The 14 Stations consist of: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane; Jesus, Betrayed by Judas, is Arrested; Jesus is Condemned by the Sanhedrin; Jesus is Denied by Peter; Jesus is Judged by Pilate; Jesus is Scourged and Crowned with Thorns; Jesus Bears the Cross; Jesus is Helped by Simon the Cyrenian to Carry the Cross; Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem; Jesus is Crucified; Jesus Promises His Kingdom to the Good Thief; Jesus Speaks to His Mother and the Disciple; Jesus Dies on the Cross; and lastly, Jesus is Placed in the Tomb.
