The Pew Forum's 2019 survey on Catholic beliefs found that only one-third of participants believe in Jesus' presence in the Eucharist, a result that has sparked a push in the Catholic Church to educate parishioners.

In response to the survey results, Winona-Rochester Bishop Robert Barron is leading an effort to distribute 1,000 copies of a Word on Fire book that aims to persuade people that communion wafers include the essence of Jesus. The book is called “This is My Body: A Call to Eucharistic Revival.”

“Friends, please help us get this book into every parish in America to help restore faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist,” Barron said on Twitter in publicizing his effort. Barron founded Word on Fire.

The fact that 69% of Catholics participating in the survey stated that they believed the bread and wine used in Communion were merely symbolic of Jesus' body and blood was a concern for Barron. The survey also highlighted a knowledge gap among those who believed the bread and wine to be symbolic, with many unaware of the church's teaching on transubstantiation, which holds that the elements of the Eucharist are transformed into the body and blood of Christ, Pew Research said of its survey.

Launched last summer as a response to the survey results, the National Eucharistic Revival is a three-year initiative aimed at educating and renewing the faith for Catholics. It includes a Year of Parish Revival, a National Eucharistic Congress to be held in 2024 and a National Year of Mission, according to a report by Catholic News Agency.

"This Is My Body: A Call to Eucharistic Revival" is available for $2 and is intended to complement the National Eucharistic Revival movement. The book seeks to deepen readers' understanding of the sacrament of Jesus' Body and Blood, Word on Fire said on its website.
