Robert Barron, the bishop of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester in Minnesota, is promoting a new course at his Word on Fire Institute.
“Friends, I'm pleased to share the latest course from the Word on Fire Institute: Adam, Eve, and Us, taught by Dr. Chris Kaczor,” Barron said in a recent tweet. “In this course, @prof_kaczor masterfully unpacks Genesis’ complex and interrelated narratives.”
Kaczor is the head of the Philosophy Department at Loyola Marymount University and is also the St. Thomas Aquinas Fellow for the Renewal of Catholic Intellectual Life at the Word on Fire Institute, Word on Fire Institute says on its website.
Adam, Eve, and Us consists of six lessons that are designed to offer insight and approaches for understanding the confusion surrounding the teachings within the book of Genesis. These lessons cover various topics, including Cain and Abel, The Evolution of Adam and Eve and others, with the aim of providing context and interpretations for these fundamental questions, the Institute’s website says.
"So, a core belief of the Catholic intellectual tradition is that faith and reason are compatible," Kaczor said, according to Word on Fire Institute. "Science, one particular kind of reasoning, and the Catholic religion are not mutually exclusive options that we have to choose between. Nevertheless, some people hold the view that one has to choose between science and Faith. Now, why is this? There are several core issues that drive this claim, but perhaps the most central concerns are about the book of Genesis."
Kaczor holds that Genesis can be used to provide wisdom for human living, even in the modern world, and he has long urged people to familiarize themselves with the biblical story of creation, the fall, and the flood. In his course, Kaczor offers perspective on how to interpret the book in a way that allows people to extract some sage advice from it, the Word on Fire Institute website says.
