DeLaSalle High School’s newest president, Dr. Bryan Bass, in a Vimeo interview conducted by two students, shared what the DLS community can expect from his leadership.
A Houston native, husband and father of two daughters, Bass said that faith and education have been instilled in him since he was a child.
“My faith has been a huge part of my life,” he said. “I’ve always been grounded spiritually.”
Internship opportunities that allowed him to build connections with younger people sparked his passion for education and spiritual guidance.
“That’s become something that touched my heart,” Bass said. “This is what I’m called to do.”
As for why he chose DeLaSalle, Bass explained his motivation.
“I smile every time because I’m passionate about the mission,” he said. “It has five core principles – respect for all people, commitment to social justice and educating the poor, inclusion, academic excellence and the holy presence of God 24/7.”
He said that living a life of love and kindness is a DeLaSalle standard that he truly appreciates.
“I feel blessed to be a part of a community that strives to have that reputation,” Bass said. “I really want us to live into that, all five of those core principles have to be living and have to be alive.”
He continued by referencing the current civil unrest in the nation as a reason why it’s even more important to practice these values.
“We should be leading the country in activating the young people in social justice in ways that prepare them to be leaders,” Bass said.
When asked what his message for students is, he stressed the importance of growth, racial equity and students being loved and appreciated, no matter their background or any differences they might carry with them.
“My door is always open if there’s ever a need to connect and have conversation, I’m here for you,” Bass concluded.
