Two high schoolers at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Catholic School donated 100 homemade protective masks to Sleepy Eye Medical Center.

Julia Helget and Madison Mathiowetz donated the masks to fulfill a service project for their school’s Minnesota Honor Society, Sleepy Eye Medical Center posted on its Facebook page.

The community gave the students donations of money and materials.

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Catholic School’s Minnesota Honor Society is a student group that seeks to implement the “Six Pillars of Character: respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, care and citizenship,” the school’s Facebook page said.

Helget and Mathiowetz told The Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch that finding enough elastic for the washable cotton masks was a challenge.

Candy Helget posted on Sleepy Eye Medical Center’s Facebook page that Helget and Mathiowetz are “great examples for all in this community.”

“Madison and Julia you are both bright lights in this world we are currently living in,” Candy Helget posted on Facebook.

Julia Helget and her sister, Gabby, also delivered homemade masks to Sleepy Eye Ambulance Service, Sleepy Eye Online said.
