Cretin-Derham Hall High School announced that Sydney Jackson was this year's Athena Award winner.

High schools throughout St. Paul nominate female athletes each year for the Athena award. It honors them for excellence and dedication in sports, Cretin-Derham Hall said.

Jackson has achieved recognition in multiple areas, including basketball, track and field and the National Honor Society, according to Cretin-Derham Hall. Jackson also volunteers at organizations including Feed My Starving Children, Seward Montessori School and Empty Bowls.

She also has received the Ann Bancroft Award, the Perry Initiative Participant and Distinguished Student Award.

"Humility is one of the most important qualities an individual can possess," art teacher Martha Thornton said, according to Cretin-Derham Hall. "Sydney Jackson has the reputation of being good at everything that she attempts. One thing that people might not be aware of is the hours and hours she puts into all of her successes, or how she composes herself when she falls just short. Always – and I mean always – with class, grace and lots of style."

Jackson will be attending Concordia St. Paul in the fall, where she will run track and major in nursing.
