Grace Hannula and Anabelle Wylie were named two of the 10 recipients of this year's Church of St. Timothy Father George Kolath Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship is given in memory of Kolath, who was an associate pastor of the Blaine, Minnesota, church and priest of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, the Star Tribune reported. It is awarded to a select number of local graduating high school seniors in commendation for their dedicated service to the church, their school and the community, the church said in its application form. It provides assistance for their future educational costs.
Grace Hannula's church mission trips provided the deepest personal impact she has experienced.
“I have been on two mission trips," Hannula said in a Facebook post by the church. "In 2018 we went to St. Louis, Missouri; and in 2019 we went to a Native American reservation in Montana. Both trips were very eye-opening. Not only did you make a difference, but you could witness how you helped people firsthand.”
She will attend the University of Wisconsin-River Falls starting the fall semester. She plans to major in business administration and continue playing lacrosse there.
While graduating with honors from Blaine High School, Anabelle Wylie used the Postsecondary Enrollment Options program to also graduate from Anoka Ramsey Community College with an Associate of Arts degree, the church reported on its Facebook page. She competed on the swim and track teams at Blaine High and also holds memberships in both the National Honor Society and Business Professionals of America.
Wylie recollects her faith formation encounters and all the friends she made while at St. Timothy's Church, she told the church, its Facebook page reported. Wylie said she always enjoyed volunteering her time and working with underprivileged children, such as at Feed My Starving Children in Coon Rapids. She was also a reliable presence at the church's carnival and Santa's workshop events. She thanked St. Timothy's Church for awarding her the scholarship.
Having already been accepted into the College of Science and Engineering, Wylie will attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities starting this fall. She plans to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree in either mathematics or computer science.
